Just finished watching the Oscar's today!

I wasn't too surprised when Slumdog Millionaire won Best Picture -- I was betting on that or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, because they had, after all, snagged most of the awards related to film pre and post-production. Anyway, congrats to the staff of Slumdog Millionaire! I haven't seen the film myself, but judging at the amount of Oscars they got -- from Sound Mixing to Editing -- it must be something worth watching.

And as my mother said, "This definitely puts India on the map." (Of course, they're already on the map, er, literally -- but this win is sure to bring pride to everybody in the Indian film industry.)

What surprised me was why The Dark Knight had so little nominations. I mean, less than I expected. I thought it was a great film, in all sorts of ways, but I guess that might be just me and my preferences. In any case, the late Heath Ledger won Best Supporting Actor, which I think he deserves after that splendid and and not to mention very horrid performance as Joker.

Heath's family received his Oscar for him, and I think their speech made a lot of people teary-eyed. Including Brad Pitt! And me!

Hugh Jackman was amusing as a host ("I don't exactly have a joke for Brad and Angelina, but I feel compelled to mention them at least five times in this show,"*), and I'd also like to mention the appearances of these people on the stage: Anne Hathaway, Ben Stiller (in a costume to boot), Reese Witherspoon (who made a joke about Ben Stiller), Will Smith, Robert De Niro and many others.

Many others -- re: VANESSA HUDGENS AND ZACK EFRON. I appropriately did this expression D: at their appearance. I mean, I'm not a hater -- if I were to choose between liking them or hating them I'd definitely say I liked them; but wtfudge, Vanessa Hudgens in fishnet stockings.

With Beyonce, too. Strutting her stuff. Wao.

Sean Penn won Best Actor for Milk. I'm not sure what exactly that movie is about, but I'm pretty sure it has gay rights chained to it. I felt proud of Sean Penn for standing up for something he believed in right there at the stage, when he got his Oscar.

As Robert De Niro did say, "How, for so many years, did Sean Penn get all those straight roles?"*

This is probably my first time watching the Academy Awards from start to finish (except well--see the edits below), and I must say it was kinda fun! :3 Only I'd rather do without all those commercials. (Then again, wouldn't we all?)

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was only shown for like, a split second -- in the short presentation of Action Movies of 2008. Is Narnia even supposed to be in that category? ;o; Oh well, I got my William Moseley swinging a sword fix during that split second, so...

Congratulations to all the winners~ ;D

---

Since I spent most -- or all -- of my morning watching the Oscar's, I vowed that my afternoon would be dedicated to the one thing I'd rather not dedicate an afternoon to:

School Work for the Week.

Things to do:
1) Tuesday [FA] FAGEtc layouting
2) Tuesday [Bio] Lab Exam #3
3) Wednesday [Socio] Reporting: Adolescent Reproductive Health (RH Bill, etc)
4) Friday [Socio] Debate
5) Saturday [Math] Exam #3

Hell week, much?

Thank goodness that today was declared a holiday, though; else my Math Exam of Doom, Third Edition would have been held today. Phew~

* On what Oscar hosts said: this is not verbatim, of course; despite the lag being only a few hours my brain does not remember the exact words said anymore. And I'm too lazy to Google. orz

[EDIT 01] The Best Animated Film still exists! I think there was something wrong with the channel I was watching on or maybe I just missed it--probably on the time I went to take a bath? But that was during the Best Original Score... oh anyway. [info]alabapoy has kindly corrected me that Wall-E did win an award! :3 Thanks, Pyorfaggot!

[EDIT 02] [info]alabapoy confirmed that the Best Animated Film award DID happen right after the Best Original Score award--WHICH IS WHEN I TOOK THE LIBERTY TO BATHE. But I was so quick--I ONLY TOOK SECONDS!!! (Well, no. Give or take a few minutes?) ;o; I didn't want to miss anything, yet it seems I missed what I was looking forward to the most. WHY.

XDDD Uwah, tiff, wall=e did win in that category. XD (Are you watching in Channel 2? It probably got cut.)

I have only glimpsed a bit of the SLumdog Millionaire, but it''s really a very heartfelt story. I have a *koffkoff* copy at home, so I would watch it later,

Yeah, Hudgens just toasted my brain. WTH was she doing THAR?

Oh, Harvey Milk. He'a agay rights activist who pursued legal rights for gay/lesbians. Nice movie.

Good luck for the week, tiff~ you can do it!

23rd-Feb-2009 08:38 am (UTC)
I heard! My friend [info]alabapoy ymed that to me too. I wanted to see Wall-E win! ;o; I'll watch out for that in the re-run.

I KNO RYT. I personally like Vanessa and Zac, but wew!

I haven't seen Slumdog Millionaire nor Milk. Must catch them sometime! ;D

Thanks ate! I'll do my best! \o/

I read somewhere that the Indian film industry actually wasn't too pleased with Slumdog. Apart from the fact that it was directed by a non-Indian person (Danny Boyle?), it's something to do with how 'stereotypical' the characters were and how unpleasant the setting was. It's like Filipinos complaining that all we have are movies about poverty. I mean, hello. They're made for a reason.

WALL-E did win as best animated picture! (Over Bolt and Kung-Fu Panda. Not much competition there)

I'm so biased in favor of Sean Penn! So happy he won over Mickey, who was the front-runner. And Kate Winslet finally gets her statuette, wew.

I wish I could have watched. What time is the re-run? O:

23rd-Feb-2009 08:49 am (UTC)
Awww. But it must have shown something if it won? But yeah, the director was a white guy (I forgot his name indeed); but well, I still kinda felt happy that when they won the other awards (pre and post production related), some Indian guys that were part of the team would come up to the stage and do the speech. \o/

But I see your point. I think some countries like us, who are in DENIAL just don't want to show their bad side, maybe? orz

I'm so happy! YEAAAH WALL-E! I really wanted it to win. :3 I squee-d when it was shown in the presentation of Romance of 2008--with TWILIGHT to boot, lololol.

Yeah, Kate Winslet! \o/ All the nominees for Best Actress were awesome, though. Anne Hathaway looked like she was glowing for just being nominated. :))

I think there's a re-run tonight and tomorrow night? \o/ Not sure what channel, though, orz gomeeen ;o;

Harvey Milk was the... first gay politician, I think. Hence the gay rights thing.

I think I stopped watching at around... Gee, IDK. After Heath, I think. I saw Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, Animated Film, Original Screenplay, Adapted Screenplay, I think I also saw Cinematography and Costume, and that performance with Zac Efron & Vanessa Hodgepodge Hudgens, Hugh Jackman & Beyonce, and the two kids from Mamma Mia... Had to go out to run errands. *SAD* If I forgot anything, it's because I was busy spazzing over my laptop XD

Heavy workload! Good luck!!
23rd-Feb-2009 10:15 pm (UTC)
Ah, I see I see! Thanks ate. So Milk is somewhat based on real events?

Haha, thanks Ate! Good luck w/ your schoolwork, too. :3

I'm sorry tiff ;____; we owe one for this.
23rd-Feb-2009 10:16 pm (UTC)
LOL. Don't worry bb, I love you all y'know ;D
23rd-Feb-2009 12:40 pm (UTC)
You HAVE to watch Slumdog Millionnaire! I swear, it's the best movie I've seen in a long time. :D

Milk is about the first openly gay politician. I'm not sure if he was a senator or what, but he was definitely not president. :p I haven't seen it myself, either, though. I wanna watch it because of the cast. Emil Hirsch (sp?) = ♥.

IMU Tiffany San Juan!
23rd-Feb-2009 10:19 pm (UTC)
I will! o/ I'll try to catch it on DVD or download it or something. Ohoho~

:)) I'd be surprised if he was president. CHANGE IS ALL WE NEED -- er. Haha~ is it based on real events or is it purely fictional? O:

EMIL HIRSCH! :3 He won me over with Speed Racer, lol, childhood dreams come true. ♥ Is he the guy Sean Penn was kissing?
24th-Feb-2009 12:02 pm (UTC)
Based on real events ang Milk, ang alam ko. But he was killed ata or something, so goodbye, Mr. President. Haha :p

I don't know if he was the one Sean Penn was kissing, since I haven't seen the movie. BUT WOAH! Props to Emil for that if he DID kiss Sean Penn! :))
25th-Feb-2009 11:45 am (UTC)
I think it's James Franco ...

I downloaded a copy months ago, but I'm too lazy to view it.
27th-Feb-2009 12:47 am (UTC)
AH! I do kind of remember James Franco in that spoof thing they did for the best picture nominees or something -- maybe it was him?
23rd-Feb-2009 01:41 pm (UTC)
I WAS SO HAPPY THAT SEAN PENN WON! I thought Frank Langella would get the award *m*

Nah, I predicted Benjamin Button wouldn't win. It was too contrived.

I really think The Dark Knight shouldve gotten a Best Picture nom. I mean, it has higher ratings than the Best Picture noms. Wtf Oscars, you've failed me yet again *remembers Brokeback Mountain*
23rd-Feb-2009 01:41 pm (UTC)
And uh, I will post this comment in my LJ as well. Wat
23rd-Feb-2009 10:22 pm (UTC)
LOL. ILU A. Szusza.

I think The Dark Knight should've gotten a nomination too! It was so good, I don't even know where to begin describing it. ;o; I also heard that it grossed higher sales than most of the noms. I know sales are only a part of measuring the greatness of a movie, BUT STILL WHY DID IT GET LEFT OUT ;o;
25th-Feb-2009 11:46 am (UTC)
It was so sad every time the camera flashed to Christopher Nolan's face ... He had that look that almost said, "I should be down there", or something.

OH YEAH, HI TIFF! :D
27th-Feb-2009 12:48 am (UTC)
B-but he SHOULD :'(

LOL, HI CLEM~
25th-Feb-2009 03:25 pm (UTC)
"I AM WOLVERINE!"

Y'know, they honestly could have ended it at that and I would have wandered off in the same happy daze. :D

I'm glad that Slumdog won Best Picture, not just because I am biologically biased for Danny Boyle, but because the film was made up of relative nobodies and won nonetheless. Wild crazy dreams do come true!

...And because I've always wanted life to be like a Bollywood movie.

Hi Tiff!
27th-Feb-2009 12:51 am (UTC)
Hello dearast :333!!!

Hugh Jackman was AWESOME. I kind of forgot, but did he have like fake blades coming out of his hands when he proclaimed his identity? If he didn't, he SHOULD'VE! xD

Slumdog was kind of an awesome win, wasn't it? The actors weren't, well, ANYWHERE close to Brad Pitt, let's say -- and yet they still took the Oscar (or should I say Oscars) home. It makes you think nice and happy inspirational thoughts!
